Among industry speculation, Top Gear host Chris Evans confirmed today that he has quit the show and will not return next season.
Evans went further saying that quitting the BBC’s flagship car show was ‘the single best thing I can do’.
It’s well known that Top Gear struggled to draw the big audiences this season, that it had been accustomed to in the past. Since relaunching in May with two lead hosts of Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc the audience numbers have been significantly lower.
Director of BBC Studios, Mark Linsey, said today that Evans believes the production team and the remaining presenters will be able to ‘take the show forward and make it the hit we want it to be’.
The following tweet was posted by Chris to his network on 4th July;
Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best.
