The BBC announced today that Chris Evans has signed a three-year deal to be the new presenter of Top Gear.

Of course Clarkson’s contract was dropped in March when he had attacked a producer on the program at a hotel in North Yorkshire. Clarkson’s Co-hosts Hammond and May maintained their solidarity and refused to remain on the show or sign without Clarkson so Chris Evans will lead an all new line-up from next year.

‘I’m thrilled ! Top Gear is my favorite program of all time,’ he said, describing Top Gear as being ‘created by a host of brilliant minds who love cars and understand how to make the massively complicated come across as fun, devil-may-care and effortless’.

‘I promise I will do everything I possibly can to respect what has gone on before and take the show forward.’

Just moments after the BBC announcement, Evans Tweeted: ‘First tweet as new Top Gear host. I would like to say Jeremy, Richard James are the greatest. And NO I’m not leaving the R2 Breakfast Show.’

Evans is of course DJ and radio presenter, known for his passion for cars, and had in fact appeared on the show to showcase his multi-million dollar vintage car collection and in particular collection of white Ferrari’s.

Interestingly, although he had been a favorite he did rule himself out with this Tweet in early March of this year ;

‘RE @SkyNews Top Gear debate. I can categorically say I am not and will NEVER be running for office. Pls discount my candidacy,’ he said at the time.

Evans is quite the Car Enthusiast who recently spent $A2.2m on a black 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder, which was a world-record price.

Although production on a new series of Top Gear will start within the next few weeks, replacements for Richard Hammond and James May have not yet been announced.

Clarkson, Hammond and May are set to head to Australia next month for their live arena production which was formerly known as ‘Top Gear Live’ .

Currently on tour in South Africa, the trio are bringing ‘Clarkson, Hammond May Live’ the Perth’s Arena July 17-18, and to Sydney’s Allphones Arena the following weekend July 25-26.
