General Motors Holden announced today that up to 270 jobs will be cut from its Elizabeth production plant in Adelaide from next month.
The car manufacturer’s plan is to reduce the production from 290 cars to 240 per day as of May 25th. This reduction equates to more than 250 positions that will need to be axed as they will be redundant.
It’s been well communicated in media that the reduction in demand for locally-made cars is the driver and main reason for the latest cuts.
The workers who will be laid off will likely be made redundant voluntarily at first and they will be supported by the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union.
The AMWU National Vehicles Secretary Dave Smith, says they are hopeful that all the job cuts will be managed through voluntary redundancies and those who choose to go now will be given opportunity to discuss options.
The Holden schedule is to stop making vehicles in Australia by the end of 2017.
