The Guinness Book of World Records has had a fresh look at the speed record of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, and decided to give back it’s “Fastest Production Car” title!
This comes after the records book decided that the Speed Limiter installed on the version of the Bugatti that is actually sold to real customers, is not enough of a differentiation from the test vehicle that broke the record to warrant removing the title.
“The focus of the review was with respect to what may constitute a modification to a car’s standard specification,” said Guinness in a statement. “Having evaluated all the necessary information, Guinness World Records is now satisfied that a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine.”
What most Bugatti and speed fans already know, is that the car holds a top speed record of 267.8 mph, whilst the production vehicle sold to retail clients, tops out at 258Mph due to the speed limiter !
Meanwhile, back at the ranch (quite literally), Texas performance tuner John Hennessey, maker of the Venom GT franken-supercar, hit a record breaking (or so it was at the time), 265.7Mph !
John now has to settle with a second best record or the record for the second fastest production car, with the run at California’s United States Naval Air Station .
Of course if it is any consolation, a Bugatti Veyron in the real world, side by side with a GT Venom in the real world, on a very very very long stretch of road, will hit the limiter and top out 7.7mph slower than the GT Venom!
How about that !?
I didn’t need anything from Guiness to restore anything with me about Bugatti 🙂
