Four of Australia’s finest vocalists – DOUG PARKINSON, JOHN PAUL YOUNG, GLENN SHORROCK and JACK JONES – will take to the stage in August for a very special series of concerts celebrating the music and genius of the greatest songwriting team of the modern era, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. LET IT BE: The Beatles Songs of Lennon and McCartney will feature two hours of much loved songs including Yesterday, Blackbird, Let It Be, Dear Prudence, Eleanor Rigby, Come Together and Hey Jude performed in state-of-the-art concert settings.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney are recognized as the most successful song-writing team in modern history and their songs changed the voice of popular music forever.  Between 1962 and 1969 they wrote and published approximately 180 jointly credited songs. The impact of their song writing was more than a cultural phenomenon. They embodied the apex of the form artistically, commercially, culturally and spiritually at just the right time, the tumultuous 1960’s, when music had the power to literally change the world.

For the singers, Lennon and McCartney’s music has played a pivotal role in their own careers. 

DOUG PARKINSON has a deep, resonant, smoky baritone voice operatic in its power, yet possessing a range and subtlety that few others can match. In 1969, he and his band, Doug Parkinson In Focus, recorded a haunting version of The Beatles’ Dear Prudence which topped the charts for many weeks, then in 1976 he appeared in the Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Clubs Band stage production which toured nationally. Fast forwarding to the 90’s, Doug continued his love of the stage playing the plum role of “The Big Bopper” in the hit musical Buddy, with his rendition of Chantilly Lace being the showstopper every night, as well as roles in Grease: The Arena Mega Musical, Happy Days,  The Cowardly Lion and The Wizard Of Oz.  As his website aptly puts it, his career has included “a great deal of success and some failures, lots of joy and many tears, plenty of passion punctuated with regular doses of pain”. Throughout, Doug Parkinson has distinguished himself as a great performer and a consummate professional, one of the true legends of the Australian music scene. 

As undoubtedly one of the most popular Australian artists of the 70’s, JOHN PAUL YOUNG has cemented himself a place in music history with a string of hits resulting in over 4 million record sales and capped with an induction in the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2009. Affectionately known as “JPY”, John’s big break came when he successfully auditioned for the role of Annas in Jesus Christ Superstar which ran from 1972 to 1974 before the releasing his first single in May 1972, the Vanda and Young penned, Pasadena.  John’s partnership with Harry Vanda and George Young continued in 1972 with the hit, Yesterday’s Hero. John Paul Young went on to became a Countdown regular, both as guest and performer, with more major hits following including The Love Game, I Hate The Music, I Wanna Do It With You, Standing In The Rain (all Top 10 hits) and his June 1978 No. 1 song, Love Is In The Air, also a huge hit internationally.

With a career spanning over 35 years, GLENN SHORROCK is one of the elder statesmen of Australian contemporary show business. Born in Kent, England, Glenn migrated with his family at the age of 10 to Adelaide in the mid-1950s. A self-confessed child of rock ‘n’ roll, Glenn has been the lead singer in some of Australia’s most loved bands including The Twilights, Axiom and, of course, Little River Band who went on to crack the lucrative US market having eight Top 10 Hits and sold in excess of 25 million albums worldwide.  As a testament to his enduring talent, Glenn has been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame twice – once in 1991 in his own right and again with the Little River Band in 2004.

Born in New York City in 1971, JACK JONES arrived in Australia as a ten year old and even as a youngster, he  began showing an incredible talent and at fourteen he was already playing professionally in both cover and original bands. After heading to the United States for several years to further study his craft, Jack eventually returned to Australia and joined the successful 90′s band Southern Sons as lead singer/guitarist. With hits such as Heart In Danger, Always & Ever, Hold Me In Your Arms, Waiting For That Train, I Can’t Wait Any Longer and Lead Me To Water, he not only enjoyed success in Australia, but in Asia, Canada and Germany, confirming he was a major talent worthy of recognition.  He has toured and recorded as singer/guitarist with the likes of John Farnham, Glenn Shorrock, Tina Arena, Tommy Emmanuel, Dweezil Zappa, Ahmet Zappa, Kylie Minogue and countless others.  His solo acoustic shows accentuate both his vocal and guitar playing talents and have proven to be highly successful with audiences and organisers alike.
