Kris Walton has beaten his own V8 Ute Qualifying record in a time of 1:21.3051 to claim the ARMOR ALL POLE Award and $1000 cash at Round 5 of the 2015 East Coast Bullbars Australian V8 Ute Racing Series at the Wilson Security Sandown 500, Friday, 11th September.
Walton set the time early in the 5 minute top ten shootout, and tried for a quicker time in the last minute but spun out at turn 4, he was lucky to still hold onto his time ahead of Kim “The Assassin” Jane who was hot on his tail, only missing the pole position by two thousandths of a second.
This is the Queenslander’s second Pole at this track and he couldn’t be happier
.
“The RENTCO Ford is great, it came good at Townsville but the Commodores had it over us there, so it’s good to come here and get a Pole again, I mean this is where it started for me and I just love this place,” said Walton.
Rookie Todd Hazelwood boasted the fastest time in the first session and although he qualified third fastest in the top ten shootout, he was hoping for better after he bent a tie rod.
“We went a tenth quicker in the shootout, I’m still really stoked with my result, to never drive on a new tyre and it’s my first time in the category, I’m rapt. The guys at Matt Racing have done well to provide me with a fast car,” said Hazelwood.
Nathan Pretty just slipped into the top ten in the last minute of the first session and walked away with fourth fastest overall ahead of Auto One racer Adam Marjoram in fifth, Craig Dontas in sixth, Rookie Adam Beechey in seventh, George Miedecke in eighth, Series Leader Ryal Harris in ninth and Cam Wilson did a great job to bring his Slideways/ Go Karting Australia Ford home in tenth.
Danny Buzadzic caused a red flag in the first session ending his race in the sandtrap at Turn 1. He was penalised with a loss of his fastest time and will start rear of grid tomorrow alongside Noel Edge, who didn’t manage to put in a lap after coming into the pits with car issues.
Ben Grice had a quick initiation to the Series, he was hit with a formal reprimand for making his way to pit exit prior to being instructed to and also received a $500 suspended fine until the end of the year for a breach of race management communications.
It will be a Ford / Holden front row tomorrow for Race 1 at 11:10am, which will be televised live on Fox Sports along with Race 2, which will also be televised live on Network Ten.
