The hitchhiking robot from Hitchbot.me has commenced a road tour of cross-country USA following successful trips through Canada, Germany and the Netherlands

Known as hitchBOT, the robot from Port Credit, Ontario departed from Salem, Massachusetts today, with a destination planned for San Francisco.

Along the way, it has a wish list that includes Times Square, Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon.

The experiment relies on strangers and passers by to pick up the humanoid robot and drive it from place to place.  hitchBOT can’t move on its own you see, hence the need to hitch hike !

Researchers in Canada created the robot as an experiment to study how people interact with it, and without rules limiting where travelers can take the robot or what they do with it, there is great interest in the journey.

Creator Frauke Zeller calls it an ‘art project in the wild’ that invites people to participate.
