Dubai’s Car Population Growth

It has recently been reported that Dubai’s car population has doubled over the past 8 years! This means that the region now has more cars per person than London or New York.

In a recent report released by the Transport Authority there, it was found that the city state boasts 1.4 million vehicles for a population of 2.4 million, which is equivalent to 540 for every 1,000 people.

In New York, the numbers are 305 vehicles per 1,000 people and 213 per 1,000 for London. This means that the number of registered vehicles in the Gulf emirate has risen 8.2 % since 2006, and that projects to 2.2 million vehicles by the year 2020.

The Traffic Authority and Dubai Government have invested heavily in public transport infrastructure with projects that include a metro rail network in 2009 and the first phase of a tram network last year.

As expected though, the car remains the preferred mode of transport and despite the massive road expansion projects and alternative transport on offer, traffic jams are frequent.
