Brazilian cyclists have staged their own take on the ‘World Naked Bike Rider’ movement.

Grabbing their bikes and disrobing some 200 people arrived at Sao Paulo’s Bicyclist Square to protest against the way cyclists are disregarded on the roads.

Most only stripped down to their underwear, or skimpiest bathing suits, but some braved the weather and wore nothing.

Participant Marcos Antonio said the motivation behind the protest was to alert motorists that cyclists have a right to share the road.

‘The idea of our group and for everyone is to let motorists know that we are here. I guess only naked like this they will notice us,’ Antonio told Reuters.

Inadequate public transport and traffic has been a major issue in Sao Paulo for years and escalated in June, when a rate hike for bus tickets erupted in protests of more than a million people nationwide.

Nude cyclist Pamela da Silva said she hoped being naked would make motorists finally take notice of her.

‘The reason because I want to be noticed. I want to be seen in traffic. This way they will see me for sure,’ Silva told Reuters.

The movement began in 2008 and has been an annual occurence in Brazil ever since.
